Practical resources / Coaching plans

A frontline coaching plan your team can put to work.

Turn a specific observation into focused practice, clear ownership and a follow-up date. Use this simple structure in your next coaching conversation.

Start with one behavior.

Describe what someone did, hear their perspective and agree on a practical next step. Keep the plan small enough to use during everyday work.

A useful plan answers:

  • What happened?
  • What will we practice?
  • Who will help?
  • When will we review?
Observe → Develop → Review

FICTIONAL EXAMPLE · NOT A CUSTOMER RESULT

Make handoff ownership clear.

Observation

Pending work was mentioned during a handoff, but no one confirmed what needed to happen next or who would do it.

Practice

Rehearse the approved handoff process. State the next action and confirm who is taking responsibility.

Cue & support

Use the handoff checklist as the cue. A supervisor helps identify unclear responsibilities or workflow barriers.

Ownership & timing

The participant and designated coach rehearse before the next shift. The supervisor schedules a review after three handoffs where there’s pending work to pass on.

Review evidence

Record what the next action was and whether someone confirmed they would take it, then decide whether to continue, adapt or close the coaching plan.

Use the same structure for your own plan.

Write one sentence for each: observation, practice, cue and support, ownership and timing, and review evidence. Agree the plan together before putting it into practice.

How specific should the behavior be?

Choose something an observer can describe. “Confirm who owns the next action” is easier to practice and review than “communicate better.”

How do we decide whether it helped?

Observe the same behavior again using agreed criteria. Record what occurred and what remains uncertain. Completing practice alone does not demonstrate improvement.
